Yala Peak Climbing Itinerary: Day-by-Day Guide to Your Himalayan Adventure

Yala Peak and Langtang, set at 5732m (approximately 18086 ft) in elevation, are slightly lower than the tallest peak in Nepal.

Day 1: Arrive in Kathmandu (1,400m)

The most awaited moment has finally arrived! You will land at the capital city of Kathmandu, which is packed with temples and unbelievable beauty – do ensure to have your cameras ready!

What happens today:

  • You will be picked up from the airport.
  • You will be given over to your devoted guide and team.
  • Inspect your climbing equipment and purchase what you do not possess.
  • Proceed to the hotel for some relaxation and preparation for the following day.

Tip: If time allows, go for a walk in Thamel, a well-known tourist area full of eating places, shops.

Day 2: Drive from the Capital City (Kathmandu) to Syabrubesi (1,550m)

For today, you will be leaving the city and moving towards the mountains. The journey to Syabrubesi, where the trek starts, is around 7 to 8 hours.

What to expect:

  • Some sections of the road are bumpy.
  • You will be passing alongside rivers, forests, and small towns.
  • Overnight stay in a guesthouse.

Day 3: Trek from Syabrubesi to Lama Hotel (2,380m)

Your trekking adventure starts for real now! Walking through oak, pine, and rhododendron forests awaits. If you’re lucky, you might spot some monkeys, colorful birds, and even red pandas!

Distance: Roughly 6–7 hours of walking.

Important features:

  • Saw the Langtang Khola (river).
  • Crossed several suspension bridges.
  • Overnight stay in the small village of Lama Hotel, which has basic lodges.

Tips: Take plenty of water and slow down for your body to adjust better to the altitude.

Day 4: Trek from Lama Hotel to Langtang Village (3,430m)

You go through the valley today in search of cooler air. The path follows the river case along yak pastures and alpine forests.

Distance: It takes around 6 hours of walking.

Your checklist includes: 

  • The magnificent snowy mountains in the distance.
  • Langtang Village’s spectacular rebuild after its destruction in the 2015 earthquake.
  • The cultural understanding of the locals in the area, that is, the Tamang culture.

Day 5: Trek from Langtang VIllage to Kyanjin Gompa (3,870m)

You’ll arrive at the last prominent village before the ascending journey — Kyanjin Gompa. It is an idyllic locale situated amid towering ranges.

Distance: Roughly 3 to 4 hours of walking.

Walk highlights:

  • Enjoy visiting the ancient Kyanjin Monastery.
  • Taste local cheese produced at the village cheese factory.
  • Rest or move about the area.

Tip: It is well advised to walk around towards the viewpoint in the mid-afternoon. This way, your body will be able to adapt to the changes in height.

Day 6: Acclimatization day in Kyanjin Gompa

Before making the next upward climb, the body needs time to adapt to the effort. As such, take this day to rest or do some gentle walking.

What you can do:

  • Hike to Tserko Ri (5,000m) and enjoy the breathtaking view of Langtang Lirung alongside a few other peaks.
  • Walk around the village for pictures.
  • Double-check that all the expedition tools required for the upward climb are set.

Why acclimatise? Reducing the speed frequently reduces the chance of getting altitude sickness, which is life-threatening.

Day 7: Trek from Kyanjin Gompa to Yala Peak Base Camp (4,600m)

You will change your starting point from the village to Yala Peak Base Camp today. The path is rocky and slightly snowy, but very picturesque.

Distance: Approx: 5 hours of walking.

What to expect:

  • You will have some or most climbing gear to carry or pack.
  • We will put up tents for camping tonight, as teahouses do not exist here.

Tip: Wear warm clothes, as the temperatures at the base camp can get cold and windy.

Day 8: Reaching Yala Peak’s Summit (5,732m) and Returning to Kyanjin Gompa

This is the most exciting and challenging day of the journey. Getting to the summit will take approximately 6-8 hours of climbing to the top and then 3-4 hours to go down. However, you will start climbing at 2 or 3 in the morning with headlights.

Climbing Description:

  • Requires no prior climbing experience, just basic fitness and willpower.
  • Some parts of the climb are steep.
  • You will be provided with crampons, rope, ice axes, and your guide will assist you.

At the peak:

  • Langtang Lirung, Shishapangma (Tibet), Dorje Lakpa, and many more can all be seen when you take panoramic pictures.
  • Return back to Kyanjin Gompa to rest and eat a warm meal after basking in the views for a while.

Warning: It is advisable that you slowly proceed to avoid overheating on the summit, as it is quite difficult without following the guide instructions.

Day 9: Trek from Kyanjin Gompa to Lama Hotel

Now that the climbing bit is done, the only thing left to do is trek back and enjoy the scenery.

  • You can expect to take roughly 6-7 hours to get to your destination.
  • While lower altitudes can be beneficial for stamina, they also make experiencing green forests pleasant.
  • Spend the night at the Lama Hotel.

Day 10: Trek from Lama Hotel to Syabrubesi

This is your last day of trekking. You’ll follow the same trail down to Syabrubesi.

Distance: About 5 hours of easy walking.

Once you reach Syabrubesi:

  • Celebrate with your team.
  • Enjoy your last night in the mountains.

Day 11: Drive from Syabrubesi to Kathmandu

After breakfast, drive back to Kathmandu. It takes about 7–8 hours.

Back in the city, you can:

  • Take a hot shower.
  • Buy souvenirs.
  • Have dinner with your team to celebrate your achievement.

Day 12: Extra Day in Kathmandu or Departure

By your itinerary, you will either have a round-trip flight back, fly back home, or exceed your scheduled time to indulge in more sightseeing in Kathmandu.

Sightseeing to include:

  • Swayambhunath Stupa,
  • Pashupatinath Stupa,
  • Bouddhanath Stupa,
  • Durbar Square.

Things to Read Up on Before You Travel

Peak season for climbing is between March: Mid-May and September: Mid-November, with skies being clear and weather favorable.
