What to do if you get locked out of your room?

Table of Contents

One of the most frustrating things that can happen to you is having yourself locked out of your home or your room. It’s a basic mistake but yes, it does happen. Often by accident too.

Being prepared and knowing what to do in these situations is a must if you want to get back inside your room or house as soon as possible. Here are some things you might want to do just in case it does happen.

  1. Call A Locksmith

AllCoast Locks highly recommends that this is the first step you take. If there’s no emergency and you can afford to wait a bit, call for a locksmith and have them open the door for you instead. The good news is that many locksmiths are available on the clock so there’s always someone to help you out.

There are many benefits to calling a locksmith for such cases. One is that they can get into your room or home without causing extensive damage to your locks or door.

In many cases, people force their way in by kicking the door down or by picking the lock themselves. This, of course, is a bad idea as it can cause serious damage to your property.

Locksmiths can also open doors that have jammed just in case this is the reason why you’re locked out.

Almost all locksmiths offer emergency services. If they are near you, they can be there in less than an hour and have your door opened at a faster rate.

2. Check If A Window Is Open

Believe it or not, many people actually solve this problem by going around their house to check if a window is open. This is applicable especially if the windows that are open are those that are in the lower part of the house. Open up the windows, get in, open the doors from the inside.

Make sure to take precautions when doing this. If the window is on a higher floor or is very out of reach, don’t force yourself to enter it. You might risk slipping can injuring yourself just trying to get inside the house.

If one of your neighbours can help you get in through the window, that would be more than ideal of course. The safer, the better.

3. Call Your Family For Spare Keys

Sometimes, the best solutions are the once we often forget about.

Just in case this happens, one of the first things you should do is call one of the family members or anyone else who lives inside the house. Check if they have a spare key hidden somewhere or if they have a spare key with them. If they do, then the problem’s already solved on your end.

Ask to meet with them somewhere to get the key. You might have to go out of your way for this but at least you don’t have to go through all of the trouble to pick your own locks at home.

That being said, we highly suggest that you have your keys duplicated. Each member of the family should have access to at least one key. You’ll never know when you’re going to need it and being prepared is often the best course of action.

4. Bring Out Your Credit Card

This one’s sort of a last resort if you may.

You don’t need a fancy lockpicking kit to open a door. It’s actually possible to open a lock using your credit card or any hard cards that are in your wallet. It does take some practice to do so but it’s worth giving it a shot in case you have no other options anymore.

Just use your card and insert it between the door and the door knob. Jiggle it a little and than forcefully try to turn your knob as you’re doing this. Alternatively, you can try pusing through the locking mechanism of the door as well.

4. Break In

If there are kids inside or you need to get inside the house as soon as possible, waiting is no longer an option.

You might need to break the doors down and luckily, this is actually an easy thing to do.  What you’d want to do is to take a few steps back from the door. Brace yourself and kick on the side of the door knob as hard as you can.

By doing this, you’re also basically breaking your locks and your door as well. Again, do this only for emergency situations.

It’s easy to say that the best way to avoid this is by bringing a key with you at all times. However, there are many other factors that you need to consider on why people get locked out of their room or house in the first place. With these tips, it will be a lot easier for you to get back in.
